Amartya – Doncel Project

Amartya is an organization that promotes systematic change through the development of social projects, which involve the cooperation of distinct actors. We are convinced that no sector, whether it be governmental, commercial or civil can bring about economic, social or environmental sustainability by acting alone. For this reason, we promote projects that are designed, developed and implemented by multidisciplinary work groups formed of professionals and representatives of the different social sectors. In this way, from the moment of their conception, the projects are supported by distinct but complementary visions, achieving an exchange of resources, knowledge and abilities that facilitates their success.

What is Doncel?

Doncel is a social inclusion project directed at youths under the age of 21 that live in Youth Shelters or Group Homes.

We propose to create new opportunities for this population by way of an assistance program that allows them to integrate into the working world.

We aim to generate political awareness about this issue and create a model that can be implemented across Argentina as a public policy to help transform this vulnerable population into an integral part of the workforce.

Institutionalisation in Argentina

Currently, in Argentina, it is estimated that there are more than 20,000 youths living in Institutions or Group Homes. These youths most commonly live in institutions due to situations of family abandonment and/or abuse. Therefore, living in homes such as these is a clear improvement, moving from previous harmful environments.

However, in the long run, living in homes can have dangerous consequences, because those who should be protected instead fall into a situation of isolation and discrimination, which labels them and prevents them from developing in a healthy manner.

At the age of 21 these youths enter a situation of greater social vulnerability, when they are forced to leave these homes without familial support, adequate preparation, or substantive work possibilities.

Consequently, once out of the homes, it is essential to promote a stable work integration that allows them to build the necessary capacities for life outside of the homes and to have more optimistic views of the future.

We are working to generate a network in which different agents from the public and private sector commit, by way of concrete actions, to work towards a social integration for these youths.
